'AUTUMN FLIGHT'
HEYSEN SCULPTURE BIENNIAL 2025

'Autumn Flight' was awarded this years Hahndorf Academy Prize shared with fellow artist Datsun Tran.

Heysen was a dedicated conservationist and all his life remained a staunch protector of the gums of the district often paying quite substantial sums of money to landowners and council to ensure that the gums were not cut down for timber.*

The battle to protect Australia's unique natural landscape continues today. I live and work in the Adelaide Hills and wake most days to the sound of chainsaws, often removing significant native trees to make way for an ever expanding population. This kinetic work titled 'Autumn Flight' is inspired by nature and falling leaves. The leaf forms made from up-cycled oak wine barrel staves, catch the light as they gently rotate in the breeze.
