THE SAND BUBBLER
2016 Private Commission, Byron Bay,
NSW. Five spheres in total ranging in size from 70cm to 100cm in diameter made on site from local Grafton Sandstone.
My inspiration came from the local Sand Bubbler crabs that live in burrows on the beach, where they remain during high tide. When the tide is out, they emerge and scour the sand for food, forming it into inflated pellets, covering the beach with beautiful artworks.
The crabs work radially from the entrance to their burrow, which they re-enter as the tide rises and disintegrates their pellets and then they start their work all over again the next day.
