MARQUETRY BOXES
In 1992 I received a scholarship to study furniture design at the University of Tasmania, Centre for the Arts, Hobart, where I came to appreciate the beauty and diversity of Australian native timbers.
I spent a year in Hobart working with a variety of timber veneers, learning the old craft of marquetry but using both traditional hand-cut and modern laser-cut techniques.
These boxes were really small scale 'studies' that allowed me to better understand how timber veneers can be manipulated and behave. Many of the boxes were made from offcut veneers that I salvaged from waste bins during my visits to various production mills.
These studies still influence my current work and thinking with regard to an ongoing discussion about minimalism versus decoration.
